The last summer hurrah before autumn

I’m holding onto summer for as long as possible and for me, that means until the autumn equinox, which takes place on 22nd September.

One of the main reasons for refusal to accept autumn is because those dahlias that I have loving looked after, fed on a weekly basis, carefully planted, talked to and babied? Well, only two are flowering – I have to hold onto summer until at least five are flowering! (I have planted 10, at least – yup.)

Here’s a few more reasons…

It’s still warm (occasionally) – summer dresses are still being worn, albeit it with a cardigan, and suppers are still being eaten in the garden, again, with a blanket to throw over your knees, as that sun is dipping below the horizon earlier and earlier every day.

I’m struggling to keep up with the runner beans and the tomatoes are still heavenly scented, local and delicious and whilst I’m roasting the tomatoes more and more, they’re still absolutely perfect. The lovely neighbours in our village have been stopping me on dog walks, to invite me over and pick damsons, which is always a joy. I mean, who doesn’t love a look in someone else’s garden!

The roses are still in bloom, they might be slowing down (aren’t we all?), but their gorgeous scent is still emanating from vases around the house and their gentle petals littering the garden – my favourite kind of litter, until the oak leaves land and are whirling around the garden.

Finally, I don’t want their to be any doubt that I am incredibly excited about autumn. It truly is a wonderful season and one of my favourites, but I am in no hurry to close the door on summer and I want to make the most of what is has to offer.
