Life

Hello there, May!

I’m writing this as we’re almost a week into May, which I cannot quite believe – doesn’t it feels like time is whizzing by as we’re all stood still? I have to say though, I’m always happy to standstill when I’m in a bluebell wood.

This week we’ll hear more from the government about changes they might make, but in all honesty, I’m getting used to this current way of life. I’ve found that we’ve got into a routine – Dave and I alternate working up and downstairs during the week, taking Bella out for a walks, weekly quiz calls with friends and family, listening for that moment on a Saturday and Sunday when The Times is pushed through the door and taking it back to bed with a cuppa – I look forward to all of these things and I find these little habits mean even more now.

One of the biggest changes for me, is the way we shop and of course, I’m talking about food! I’ve always been interested in where my food comes from, but I was much more of a frequent shopper – popping into shops, going to the greengrocer or butchers for specific meals for the next couple of days, but obviously, this has all changed.

We go out once a week and will visit the supermarket, the greengrocer and the butchers, all with a clear plan of what we’re going to buy and its really helped me to appreciate food and our local shops even more. If we run out of something, most recently brown rice, we can’t pop out to get some more, so we just have to make do and what I’ve also realised is how much is packed into our cupboards and freezer!

Something else that I know doesn’t just apply to me, is the wine consumption has increased. Oh yeah. I’ve actually just had an email from Perkbox letting me know about a promotion on wine, which I’m trying to pretend isn’t there… I don’t feel bad about it and there’s no right or wrong way to deal with what’s going on. I was thinking by now I should have done X,Y or Z, but I’m not going to make myself feel bad, I’m just going to pat myself on the back and congratulate myself for keeping my head above water and keeping going. Yes, there’s been tears, yes, there’s been hangovers, but my family, my friends and the people we love are all ok so we count ourselves lucky.

And the month of May brings with it, two bank holidays with the first on Friday, where we’ll be celebrating VE Day, and that its been 75 years since the end of World War II, which is a tremendous occasion. I envisage that BC (before Corona), there would have been street parties to celebrate this momentous date, so I think a garden picnic might well be on the cards, especially as the weather is meant to be rather lovely.
