Autumn Festival at Daylesford

As I’m sat here looking through the doors as the rain beats against them, I can’t believe how incredibly warm and sunny it was at the autumn festival at Daylesford only four days ago! The seasons really have changed in a blink of an eye.

Yesterday officially marked the first day of autumn, as 23rd September is the autumn equinox. A favourite quote of mine about autumn is by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall” and I think that is so true. Looking at my feed on Instagram, it’s full of virginia creepers with their vivid red leaves, cosy corners of peoples home lit with candles and lots and lots of fires. It seems we really love autumn, we love the cosiness, the comforting food, the picturesque walks and any, and all excuses to put the fire on.

So like the idiot I am, I’d totally forgotten about the festival – I’d put a reminder in our diaries for the week before and in those seven days, it had totally slipped my mind. Luckily, I live with someone who has a much better memory than me and he was up bright and early on Saturday, raring to get out of the door to get to the festival!

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the festival and we were pleasantly surprised about how big an event it was! The Daylesford Harvest festival is an annual event that happens in September to embrace the change of season and celebrate the produce we can now begin to enjoy.

We arrived and were given a booklet about the event, so first things first, we had a sit down by the fire pit (which was lit, yah!), had a coffee, a baguette and looked at what activities there were.

As we walked around we saw what a brilliantly organised event it was, with plenty of things for the children and adults alike to participate in. There were talks, beautiful livestock, an abundance of food stalls, music, pop-up tents with bee keepers, cheese or filled with art and all of this on a beautiful sunny day.

I was totally mesmerised by the drawings from the artist, Gary Cook. I love trees, I mean how can you not, and I really felt entranced and drawn in by these pictures.

Not only was the art on display, but also his sketchbooks which were just incredible! As someone who can barely draw a stickman, I am in awe of anyone who can bring a picture to life. The handsome one is incredibly talented and can easily sketch out ideas of how our garden can look and in the same breath, draw out a blue tit. I would if I can persuade him to create a piece of art for me?

Look at these colours! Doesn’t make you just want to take it all home and get cooking?

After walking around and sampling all the festival had to offer, we decided to take a seat on a bale of straw and have a glass of something pink. We enjoyed people watching, sampling the food and made plenty of four-legged friends (don’t tell Bella).

A truly lovely event and a great way to begin the autumn season.
