Life

Current Reads

I love reading, always have and always will. Ever since I could digest words with my mind, I’ve had a pile of books next to my bed and when I was little, my Mum would catch me reading under my duvet with a little flashlight. I did turn the TV on late one night instead of reading and Arachnophobia was on, which terrified the life out of me! After that I never watched late-night TV.

The Handsome One took this picture a couple of weeks ago, after we’d spending a couple of hours in the pub – I’d been feeling pretty rough as we’d drank a lot of champagne the night before, so I thought a hair of the dog would help. Three pints later I was feeling pretty awesome, so when we got home I settled down on the sofa with my book and this is what happened…

I’ve read some really great books recently (including the one above), so thought I’d share some of my reads from my ever-growing book pile.

In Safe Hands and At Your Door by J.P. Carter

I love a good detective book and these did not disappoint. I’ve not heard of the author before, but that could be because he wrote books under different names previously (Jaime and James Raven). I was gripped by from the first page and you can really understand how the detective (DCI Anna Tate) feels and what a job she has on her hands. These books are set in England, which is another tick in the great box – as soon as I finished Safe Hands, I ordered At Your Door. The third book is out next year and I will definitely be pre-ordering that.

Killing It by Asia Mackay

This book was surprisingly funny! I loved Alexis Tyler’s character; she’s a new Mum but also an assassin who is struggling with taking people out and leaky breasts. A fabulous fun read and what a great first book as an author. If you enjoyed Killing Eve, you’ll definitely enjoy reading this.

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

This book took me right back to my childhood. Queenie is a young Jamaican British woman who is dealing with depression, but also dealing with her Jamaican family, who are superstitious and do not understand or believe in mental health issues. I empathised, laughed and cried with this book. Absolutely brilliant.

One of Us is Lying by Karen. M McManus

This wasn’t my favourite of the books I’ve read recently, but it was good and the ending surprised me. However, writing this makes me feel old because it’s been referenced as having a liking to Pretty Little Liars and it’s something I’ve never seen as it’s not really my cup of tea. However, I do like Made in Chelsea…

Everything is Lies by Helen Callaghan

I wasn’t sure where this was going to go or how it was going to turn out, but I needn’t have worried because this was a great read. Sophie is the main character, who’s parents have lead a quiet, unassuming life and one day she returns home to find her Mother hanging from a tree in the garden, with her Father lying on the floor bleeding to death. The secrets soon start to spill and it’s definitely not what you think it might be.

Enjoy!
