This year has been difficult on the seed-growing front. Last year, I had more seedlings that I knew what to do with, this year I’m struggling to even grow lettuce!

I did catch Edna (our Silkie Bantam chicken) with her head in one of my pots, eating the lettuce seeds, so that may be why the lettuce isn’t growing, but what about the rest?

I killed off the tomato seedlings, by putting them outside on a sunny day, which bleached their leaves and they then disintegrated. I put the courgette plant out and then we had frost the following week, which was the end of that and none of my peas seem to want to germinate – what’s a girl gotta do to grow some vegetable plants??
The infuriating thing is that the vegetable patch is bare, aside from the garlic that I planted last year and some potatoes shoots that have appeared, so now there’s lots of weeds growing and to combat that I need to put something in the ground but nothing will grow for me to put in there…

Not one to quit, I’ve planted some more seeds, I’ve got a few beetroot seedlings that I’ve sown directly, which are popping their heads out and my herbs are doing quite well, so not al bad.
I grew this plant from seed last year and I *think* it’s Tumbling Ted (saponaria ocymoides) – I’m really pleased with how its turned out – the flowers are stunning and I hope it spreads itself about throughout the summer.

We’re going to be spending more time landscaping the garden this summer, now that the house is on the final stretch from a renovation point of view, so I need to be thinking about what flowers to grow. I grew cornflowers last year and they’ve self-seeded, which I absolutely love and I’m trying to grow some Night Phlox again because I love the smell.
The beds in the garden are going to change and we’ve got quite a large space, so I’m reluctant to invest in any plants until we’ve decided on the design of the garden. However, we did think it would be nice to have something that smelt gorgeous growing over the bi-folds, so the Handsome One created something for me that I found on Pinterest! More on that later…
