You can probably sense a bit of a rhubarb theme at the moment… The neighbours have a crown of rhubarb that is such a prolific grower and they are constantly telling us to help ourselves, so we wouldn’t be very good neighbours if we didn’t.
A few weeks we made rhubarb & ginger jam (and the recipe can be modified to make rhubarb & orange if ginger ain’t your jam (sorry not sorry)), and every time I make it, I always wonder why I don’t make jam more often because it’s so easy!
Talking of easy, this leads me onto making my own rhubarb vodka. Yes, it takes a couple of months before you can drink it, but actually knocking it together takes no time at all.

What you’ll need
Sterilised air-tight jar/s (depending on size)
450g rhubarb
140g caster sugar
Orange zest strips – just from one orange
70cl of vodka
- Wash and chop the rhubarb into quite thin slices and put these into the jar. Add the sugar, orange zest and vodka.
- Seal and store the vodka mix in a dark cupboard for 6-8 weeks – give it a shake and swirl every so often during this time. This enables the sugar to dissolve and distributes the flavour.
- Once the time is up, strain the mix through a muslin and then transfer into your sterilised bottles / jars.
N.B. If you want a stronger taste, leave it to infuse for an couple of extra weeks.
Now you can enjoy your creation and be sure to drink it neat – in my opinion it doesn’t need anything else.
A x
