Improving my (gut) health

Did you know there’s about about 100 trillion microorganisms, living inside your digestive system right now? Well up until recently, I didn’t either.

Microorganisms

As with many people, I suffer with random spouts of tummy cramps that lead to me feeling bloated and lethargic, so I’ve also been thinking that it’s time to start looking after myself a bit more by paying attention to my gut.

You know you get told to ‘Trust Your Gut’? This is because your brain is constantly working with your gut, and in layman’s terms, if you haven’t got a happy tummy then you haven’t got a happy mind.

Your gut can be referred to as your ‘Second Brain’ and this affects your mood, your appetite and how you feel, and this is what I want to change.

I  walk everyday, eat well and relatively healthy apart from the odd block of cheese (damn you, truffle brie!), but I would like to lose a bit of weight, feel happier in myself and address my tummy issues. I’ve been doing some research and there are live probiotics (with rave reviews) out there that you can order to help with your gut.

I’ve ordered sachets of Vivomixx Probiotic, which is a highly concentrated probiotic food supplement that contains 450 billion live bacteria and that’s the important part. Live. Yes you can get pills, but the likelihood is that they won’t be live when you digest them and you want them to be, so they set up camp in your tummy and look after you!

I’ve been researching the best way to take this supplement and I found a lovely looking chocolate shake on The Londoner, which I’ve adapted slightly – I’m going to give this a whirl for a month or two and see if I notice a difference.

My shake contains:

1/2 greenish banana (frozen if I’ve remembered)

1 tablespoon of organic peanut butter

1 tablespoon of hemp seeds (get shelled so you don’t have to blend for ages. I’ve made that mistake for you.)

1/2 tablespoon of organic cacao powder

200ml keffir (I think this one actually tastes quite nice!)

Splash of water (when I’ve measured the kefir out, I put some water in the jug, swill it round and add it to the blender as I don’t like the shake too thick)

Couple of cubes of ice

1 pack of Vivomixx Probiotic (you can get these, which are more expensive but I don’t see any difference in what they offer, so why pay more?)

Then blend away and you’re done!

Hopefully this will shake up my digestive system.
